Course Information
This course is where a completely student originated product is planned and executed. Students take photos of events both on and off campus during and after school hours, interview classmates, teachers and staff, conduct research and fact-checks, and then combine all these elements into an award-winning 220-page yearbook.
Commitment is an integral part of this production level course; staff will be asked to stay after school to not only cover events but to also meet page deadlines, as well as attend summer workshops to plan the upcoming year’s yearbook theme and coverage.

Journalism
This is a foundational course that prepares students for print production in general, and producing Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High's yearbook, the Tiburon, and/or the newspaper, The Current, more specifically.
During the course of the school year, students will learn about their rights as student journalists, ethical behavior as it pertains to journalism, how to interview sources and gather news and facts, and how to write in a journalistic fashion, in addition to lessons on identifying facts-based journalism, media bias, and other topics.
Students will use Schoology through their student portals to view and submit assignments, and communicate with Ms. Hale. Students are also encouraged to email Ms. Hale at mourningj1@gmail.com if they are unable to communicate with Ms. Hale through Schoology. Her dadeschools email address is used primarily for communication with parents, vendors and other community stakeholders; the Gmail address is only for J1 students.
Students who pass the course with a final cumulative grade of a B or higher are eligible to join the Tiburon yearbook or The Current newspaper staff, with adviser approval.
***If you have taken Journalism 1/Introduction to Journalism before, or have been on a newspaper or yearbook staff before, you can go straight into the production level classes, with adviser approval. See Ms. Hale for more details***
